Wed. night was spent trying to get all the figures base coated and ready for game night. I was lucky to make it in time.
Thursday finally got here and I headed down to TGR for a game of warlord with my brand new army.
The list I brought was the following:
Reptus - 499 points
Troop 1
Khong-To
Pakpao, Clutchling Caster
Reptus Longstriker x 2
Reptus Skullbreaker
Reptus Warrior x 2
Troop 2
Gam-Nan, Gaan-Hor Elder
Clutchling Javeliner x 2
Gaan-Hor Warrior
Raptor
I was facing a reven army of a single troop made up of :
Reven - 497 points
Varaug the Great, Bull Orc
Gaaguk, Bull Orc Berserker
Bull Orc Berserker x 4
Bull Orc Archer x 2
Bull Orc Hunter x 2
Luck Stone
I had a 3 to 2 advantage on the draw because of the extra troop and both sides having tactician.
Turn One I rushed the speed units to the middle of the board and hid behind a rock. then moved every one else to the middle of the board. The orks moved down the board and split off the hunters and archers to harass my units.
Second turn I charged the archers with the the Gaan Hor and Raptor, the raptor was soon taken out by the hunters. (This proves the fact that painted mini's die faster). The Javeliners got of some ranged attacks and wounded a breaker. (Bad news is berserkers get meaner as they are wounded. I also made a mistake and let a berserkers charge in on my caster. I also charge my warriors, warlord, and skull breaker and surround the Reven Warlord and get some hits in.
Turn 3 I go first and the caster sets the orc on fire and runs away 2 berserkers quickly charge him and he is off the table without spending a single spell point. (note to self: fireball early to make sure you get value from the caster. He is quite squishy). The warriors kill the Reven Warlord but he makes his tough check, mean while the other 2 berzerkers kill the javliners, and the long strikers team up on a breaker wound him but he kills one of them. On the other side of the board the Gaan-Hor Warrior falls to the hunter and archers.
Turn 4 the turning point
I use first strike to take out the warlord. (cool learning point no tough checks when first strike is used) a skull breaker, and one of the berserkers goes down while on the other side of the board the Gan hoar elder and an archer went down. freeing up those forces to move across the board and join the scrum. wounds passed around both armies.
Turn 5 first strike used to take out one berserkers and massive wounds put on elite berserker and he is removed from game but the other long striker is lost. hunters charge in and kill Kong but are killed in return. Leaving a single archer of the reven force on the board. It takes 2 turns to chase him down and only my 2 warriors are left on the field. Score this as a win for the Reptus.
Having said all that I think Arron let me win as it was only my second game and he spent a ton of time helping me make good choices but I still had a really good time and it was nice to see that I could have fun with a casual army. Still curious to see what happens when I run up against a tuned competitive list. I have a feeling it will not be pretty.

Raptor
I used the raptor as a test for the Reptus skin tones and armor plates. I think it came out pretty good. Now to do the warrior so I can add in the 3rd color set for the Armor. Hopefully it will still look pretty good.

Sunday - Family paint Day 2
The wife had book club followed by girl scouts so the kids and I were banished upstairs for most of the day. This allowed us to continue to family paint. the boy finished his dwarf warrior and we mounted it on a base with some brown and green flock. The daughter is advancing her technique and this time base coated her pink elephant. I'm not sure if I'm passing on words of wisdom or just driving them nuts at this point. For myself I did not paint and instead assembled the new Warlord models. Now to base coat and start painting. I'll eventually get back to painting orks.
Enter Daughter - Stage Right
Well since the son started painting a dwarf my daughter could not be left out. Luckily a trip to Walmart led to the purchase of 6 ceramic figures for her to paint. She wanted it mounted on a stick just like dad's. I think the tiger could take the ork in a fair fight.
The boy continues to make progress. I'm working hard to make sure it's all his work. Below is a status photo.
Spending time painting with the kids has been rewarding but I have not made much progress. One more ork was completed.

Painting with the son
I don't have OCD, I don't have OCD, I don't ..... Yeah right. Apparently when it comes to painting minis I'm a little bit of a control freak. So I'm starting a new game system (Warlord) and the boy wants his own army. In the past we've said the u-marines and Cygnar were his armies but really I did all the painting. This time he wants dwarfs and wants to paint them.
Hurray the boy is growing up. Crap I need to learn to share my toys. So back to what we did. We assembled two dwarf models and he base coated them. Ok, the basic base coat is paint the whole thing black. Should have been easy but I kept finding myself taking them out of his hands and getting he deep recesses for him. I'm going to have to work on showing him things on one of my models so he can do his completely. Hopefully I can do better tomorrow when we start working on the base coat layer.
Also his previous armies are both blue. So guess what color he wants this time. That's right BLUE. At least I don't have to buy any paints for him. lol.
Here is the picture he selected from the Reaper painted gallery
I'm also hoping that since these are his he can use his household points to get more. Kind of like the girl does to get more webkins. Really a mini is cheaper the a webkin so I think he can do it.
Game Night
I made the trip to TGR for open gaming and I now believe I've found a exceptional store to plan on attending a weekly game night. I have a hard time explaining how cool this store is compared to what I usually expect in a gaming store. Tonight was a demo night for Warlord which is produced locally by Reaper Games.
I really enjoyed the free form feel to the game. The troops really feel more like D&D adventure parties then formed ranks in a formalized army. I like the fact that I can simply buy models that are cool and put them together in many different ways.
Now on to the Game. I played in a Dwarf civil war 500 pts per side. My army was composed of:
Herryk Aesir High Cleric with mithrial Armor
2 X Halberdier
3 X Warrior
The opponent had:
Logan Battlefury
Ivar Silverfist (I think)
3 Mancatcher
As this was a demo game we did not use any doctrine.
The game play was quick and I really liked the initiative draw each turn and it added a level of randomness and made planning a little tricky. Ended up only losing 2 warriors and defeating all but Logan by the end of turn 5. The most memorable part of the game was Herryk kiting Logan using mire and the fact that the restore spell to remove the stunned effected failed 2 turns in a row. It was also fun to see the grunts savage the caster.
So the first game was a nice refreshing win. Much better then the taste of total defeat from my last game night out.
So after the game I sat around talking to several play tester / designers from reaper who were putting on the demo. They helped me pick out some reptus minis and started me on my way to building some troops. Time to add the new minis to the need to paint list.
Over all a really great night!!!!

Ork Assembly Line
I usually like to paint one at a time because I seek the fulfillment of finishing a mini but for large groups I find the assembly line is faster. Basically paint the same color on all the models before starting the next color. My only problem with this is that it gets boring so I just finish one every now and then so I feel some accomplishment.
This has resulted in me finishing 4 more orks this week but with the remaining 13 are getting the brown pants painted. Hope to finish these up soon.

Snow Day
Thursday and Friday saw a record amount of snow in Dallas. Well since I have to stay home might as well get some painting done. I finished the Mechanik and 3 gobbers and started up the ork assembly line to try and finish up the shoota boyz.

Field Trip
Went to http://www.thegamersrealm.com/ for lunch and I was really impressed by the store. Has a really comfortable vibe and looks like a great place to spend some time. They also have a very impressive stock of both 40K and Warmachine.
So needless to say I picked up a few Goodies. Now to find time to paint them.

The smell of Burnt Ork
Got a chance today to make the trip to XMAX games today and I was really impressed by the store. Very friendly staff, (Greeted me at the door, without felling like they were hovering) and the Space. No purchases but that was really hard as I just feel guilty anytime I play and don't pay.
Having said that on to the game. It was a 400 pt combat patrol. I drew a space marine player who was nice enough to walk me through the game. It helped that he also played orks and knew the rules. Gave me a lot of hints to prevent the but whooping I got from repeating. Did I say but whooping, more like a complete domination.
My army was the following:
Big Mek with KFF
Deffkopta with twin linked rocket launcher
11 slugga boys with rocket launcher, Nob with powerclaw
11 slugga boys with rocket launcher, Not with powerclaw
I pretty much hosed myself in the first round. I charged forward with the truck and Kopta leaving the Mek and other group of boys to slog there way in. the marines drop pod landed right by the truck and unloaded a dreadnought. which proceeded to blow up the truck which was followed up with a deathwind missiles from the pod and a few bolter shots from the combat squad the jumped out of the rhino. when the dust settled all that was left was 1 Nob who refused to run. And this was the way the game went. Final score the orks were completely wiped out and the marines had suffered a single Immobilizing effect to the dread. No Marine bodies for the orks to claim as a moral victory.
So the question is then what did I learn.
1) add heave armor to the Nob to help them say around longer
2) having 1 rocket per group was pretty useless, never got a hit
3) think about adding boss pole to prevent units from breaking
4) Need to get another truck and mobilize the whole force or leave the truck and kopta at home and bring more boys.
5) paint the lootas to bring some bigger guns.
Hey looks like I learned a lot so not a bad result after all.
